Hiking
Tons of trails...
The Sussex Skylands is a pretty spectacular part of New Jersey, especially when you consider the miles of hiking trails here. There are hikes to waterfalls, family-friendly strolls (mostly flat) on rail trails and through state parks, and climbs that bring you to New Jersey's highest point, located in the aptly named High Point State Park. Here you can see three states - NJ, NY and PA - from one vantage point!
...including 45 miles of the famous Appalachian Trail.
There's the always-thrilling "Stairway to Heaven" hike that's part of the Appalachian Trail (AT). You'll traverse a boardwalk, a suspension bridge, and a cow pasture to climb to what we think is the best view in NJ.
Speaking of the AT, country lanes or park roads (the trail runs through two state parks, High Point and Stokes State Forest), intersect the trail every few miles of the entire stretch so you can plan any number of short day hikes. Or take a couple of days to walk the whole distance. Elevation in this section ranges from 350 to 1,685 feet, so if you prefer to walk downhill most of the time, hike north to south.
